Top 10 Tuesday: Best Books of 2016

Hi Everyone! Wow, it’s sure been a long time since I participated in Top 10 Tuesday hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. If you are wondering why, check out this post from yesterday πŸ˜‰

I decided to write my TTT this week about the best books I read in 2016. I enjoy year-in-review posts so this should be fun. All links go to my blog reviews of the books. I also thought it would be fun to break them up by categories. I like how it turned out. Enjoy!

Favorite historical fiction novels, WWII:

Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and SweetΒ by Jamie Ford // I adore this book. Seriously, I just love it. It’s a new perspective on WWII for me and I loved the innocence yet maturity, vivid descriptions, and poignancy of this novel.

A Sparrow in Terezin by Kristy Cambron // I love Kristy’s novels and this is my favorite thus far. She has such a beautiful writing style and creates incredible imagery through her stories.

Favorite Book Club book:

Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein // This was by far my favorite book club read in 2016. It was so intense and fiery, but also warm and emotional. Another great WWII novel that is written in such an interesting way.

Favorite historical romance:

With Every Breath by Elizabeth Camden // I discovered Elizabeth’s books late in 2016 and can’t get enough of her novels. She creates such a beautiful story in this one in a setting and time that was entirely new to me. I can’t wait to read more from her!

Favorite eARC novel:Β

The Cautious MaidenΒ (The Everstone Chronicles Book #4) by Dawn Crandall // The Everstone Chronicles has become one of my all time favorite series. And IΒ was lucky to receive this novel from DawnΒ as an eARC. I love Dawn’s captivating storytelling and absolutely swoon-worthy romantic heroes and kisses.

Favorite Fantasy:

Harry Potter and the Cursed ChildΒ by J. K.Rowling et al // IΒ have always been a super Harry Potter fan. So I was destined to enjoy this one from the start. I thought theΒ screenplay gave the story a unique feel. And I am already saving my pennies to go see this show in London one day (and hoping it comes to Dallas soon!)

Favorite Science Fiction:

The Martian by Andy Weir // I don’t read a lot of sci-fi. But I really liked this one. It’s such a cool blend of action and science. It feels like this story could actually happen. And for the record, I loved Matt Damon in the movie too.

Favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy:

Winter (Lunar Chronicles Book #4) by Marissa Meyer // I discovered the Lunar Chronicles in 2015 but read final book in 2016. I think this series is so clever and engaging. I definitely recommend them to fantasy and science fiction lovers. How awesome would these be as movies?!

Favorite Author Voice:

Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell // This novel continues to stick with me now almost a year later. I think Rowell has such a compelling and unique writing style that captivates readers so easily. I have never read anyone like her. Such a moving novel!

Favorite Classics Club read:

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley // I was so pleasantly surprised by this novel. I really loved it. The story is intense. The characters are complex. AndΒ it’s a classic that is easier to finish.

What were some of your favorite books in 2016?

  2. I actually picked up a copy of Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and SweetΒ at a thrift store after you had gushed about how much you loved it! You are actually the second person who has recommended it to me, so I really want to get to it this year.

I read The Butterfly and the Violin this past year and thought it was beautiful. I am now curious about A Sparrow in Terezin since you say it is your favorite Cambron book.

  3. Travelling inside books

I read like 30 pages of the Martian, it is cool. But Idk why I can’t finish it. I guess I just have to wait for that moment when you just get that awkward need to read a specific book.
    HP , ALWAYS ❀️
I also discovered Colleen Hoover this year, and I love her books.
Favourite SCI FI must be the first 2 books of the Firebird series by Claudia Gray. Currently reading #3 (chapter 12 exactly)
