[It’s Always Sonny]: An ARC Review

Hi y’all!

I hope that spring has found you wherever you are. We are enjoying warmer weather and more outside time. It’s been so lovely!

I am thrilled to be sharing my review of It’s Always Sonny by Kate Watson! I was lucky enough to get an ARC from Kate for this third book in her Sweet as Sugar Maple series. I’ve loved every book in this series and Sonny is such a fantastic addition. These stories are full of heart, friendship, and absolutely beautiful love. I loved getting to know PJ and Sonny.

I was lucky to meet Kate at @adesertbookaffair last month and she is as delightful and witty as her characters! And trust me, no one writes better witty banter than Kate!

In this book, you’ll find:
second chance romance
only one tent
only one sleeping bag
meddling family
forced proximity
snarky grandma
witty banter
beautiful romance, sweet not spicy

This book releases today — March 21, 2024!

Book Summary: “Sunshine always melts ice eventually. And I’m starting to feel the burn.

People may call me an “overachieving ice queen,” but I would do anything for the people I love. So when my friends ask me to host an event at their famous farm, I’m more than happy to help…until I discover I’ve been set up. The “event” is actually a reunion for my ex’s family. I pushed away Sonny Luciano years ago when my parents gave me the cruelest possible ultimatum. I told him it was so he could pursue his NFL dreams, but I was terrified that he’d eventually learn what my parents I’m unlovable.

But Sonny doesn’t act like I’m unlovable. He acts thrilled to be with me. And the way he lights up when he sees me with his loud, loving family eclipses the sun. Sonny has grown in all the right ways, and our connection is electric enough to make me forget why I pushed him away in the first place. But when we get stuck alone in a tent during a freak storm, I have to decide if I’m going to let him melt my heart or if I’ll freeze him out forever.

I loved getting to know PJ and Sonny. They both have overcome a lot and are still discovering what is most important to them. Neglect. Pressure. Perfectionism. Fame. Family (of all sorts). And yet their story is also beautiful and hopeful. Getting inside PJ’s head was fascinating and also delightful. I loved her inner monologue pepping herself up for everything. And I felt more connected to her as I learned about her childhood and the experiences that have shaped her. PJ is amazing and seeing all that she is able to accomplish despite intense setbacks was so neat. Sonny is so easy to love. I loved his ability to connect with everyone and make them feel seen and heard. I loved his protectiveness especially for PJ and how he seems life beyond football. We get more complexities to his character than I expected. But those make him more endearing. I was routing for these two from the first pages.

I loved seeing their second chance romance unfold. It’s clear from the beginning of the story that PJ and Sonny complete each other in ways no one else can. I loved getting flashbacks to their initial dating and seeing how much they loved each other. And how they can now learn from their mistakes. The journey they go on to rediscover their love is so much fun! A surprising family reunion. Corn hole. Baby goats. One tent. One sleeping bag. One hot tub. And the most snarky grandma ever (she’s a favorite!) Their first kiss (in this book) is fire and ice and so very swoony. I love when they let down their walls and decide to be together. When they both realize that their love has been there all this time, they finally feel whole. I absolutely loved their story and seeing them both find happiness, meaning and true love in their lives.

If you haven’t read this series yet, stop what you’re doing and start it now!! You will love the Janes and their beautiful love stories. Check out my reviews of the previous books in the series (and novella set in the same world!) — Strawberry Fields for Never, Baby Llama Drama, & Single All the Way.
