[The Pocket Pair]: A Review

Hi y’all!

Hope you are enjoying the last days of summer. I am ready for school to start. It’s going to be a great year!

I am so excited to share my review of The Pocket Pair by Emma St. Clair! It is just good for my soul to be back in Sheet Cake and finally get Val and Chevy’s story. What a beautiful romance between two of my favorite Sheeters. I stayed up too late really getting into this one and I loved it!

Book Summary: “Do I have feelings for my sister’s best friend? Of course not. That would be stupid, considering my sister once threatened to castrate me if I ever hurt Val. Hurting her is the last thing I want to do, which is all the MORE reason I can’t have feelings for her. Val deserves the world, and I’m NOT the man who can give it to her.

But when Val announces she’s leaving town (and the country), I’m suddenly confronted with some very capital-F Feelings–ones that refuse to stay stuffed down deep where I’ve hidden them for more years than I care to admit. Having her crash in my guest bedroom until she leaves only makes things worse.

Little by little, Val chips away at my defenses, and despite all the solid reasons I have, my resolve starts to crumble. The thing is–none of the circumstances have changed. Val is still planning to leave the country. And I … well, I might have gotten more in touch with my feelings, but I’m still the same man. NOT a man who can promise things like life-long commitment. NOT a man Val can count on. NOT the good guy everyone seems to think I am. If only I could get Val and the rest of this nosy, meddling matchmaking town to believe me–and if my own stubborn heart wasn’t trying to convince me otherwise.

The Pocket Pair is a best friend’s brother, friends to more rom-com set in the fictional small town of Sheet Cake Texas. You’ll find plenty of laughs and sizzling chemistry in this closed door romantic comedy. It’s the third in a series, but can be read as a standalone.”

Chevy and Val’s love story is slow burn and full of sizzling chemistry. The tension while they both try to reign in their feelings is palpable. Their first kiss is EVERYTHING! Chevy’s realization about how he truly feels for Val and the race to tell her is so swoony. I love everything about their relationship. I love how they build each other up and show how they are worthy of love and belonging. I love their kisses all over town. I love their whispered confessions and the little ways they take care of each other. I love when they say I love you for the first time. And that Chevy wants Val to follow her dreams. I love that they are home for each other.

I appreciated the difficult pasts they both have to work through but especially how they help each other overcome those hard things. Val was abandoned by her family at different points in her life but is still able to find family and joy with Mari and her friends. I love how Chevy feels like home to her. Chevy carries a heavy load that is so sad to hear about. His father was living a double life and the burdens that Chevy carries because of his father’s mistakes were heartbreaking. But I loved how he tries to move forward and the journey he begins to help see himself as his own man and capable of his own choices. His promises to Val are so beautiful because of his past!

There is something so magical about Sheet Cake. I love it so much! I loved seeing all my favorite characters from previous books in this one as well. Lindy and Pat (YAY!), Winnie and James, Mari, Tank, and more. It feels like coming home to read another story set in Sheet Cake. I loved being back in this world and back in Emma’s fantastic storytelling and witty banter. Another fantastic romcom!

What are your favorite rom coms?
Any Emma fans out there? Which are your favorite books?

Also, exciting news! Emma just announced her newest surprise novel coming out August 31st! It’s the first in a collection of fall romcoms called Sweater Weather. The books are all written by different authors including some of my absolute favorites like Emma (and Melanie Jacobson and Jenny Proctor)! They will all be available on KU too. So excited for these!! One book is being released each week for 8 weeks. And Emma is first! Her new book is called Just Don’t Fall and I can’t wait to read it!
