Hi everyone! I am a bit late on this 2018 Goal List. But I am super excited for 2018 and all the great books I want to read! Enjoy!
10 Classics // Top books on my hopeful list include Little Men and Jo’s Boys by Louisa May Alcott and Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriett Beecher Stowe.
Little Dorrit by Charles Dickens // If you’ve been around here for a few years, you’ll know I have 5 big novels (800+ pages) on my Classics Club list. I read War and Peace in 2016. And I read Les Miserables in 2017. My big classic read this year is Little Dorrit. I have seen the BBC adaptation several times and love it. I am so excited to read it!
10 Newbery Honor/Award Books // I loved reading more children’s literature in 2017 so I want to continue that goal this year. My first finished book of the year was Invincible Louisa, a biography of Louisa May Alcott that won the Newbery Medal in 1932.
5 New Reads from my Shelves // First of all, this meme is so true for me! I am super skeptical about lending my books to anyone, even family. But I sure love to collect books! In the last few years, I have started buying more books that I have already read and loved. But this year, I want to read some of the books that I own that are still on my TBR.
5 Nonfiction books // What I am most interested in the nonfiction genre is history. I read a few biographies and histories last year that I really enjoyed. So I am incorporating more nonfiction into my reading this year.
Go Forward With Faith: The Biography of Gordon B. Hinckley // Another bookish tradition I’ve started the last few years is reading a biography of a LDS Church prophet. So far, I have read about President Monson and President Kimball. Excited to read President Hinckley’s biography, the first prophet I remember.
A Hobbit, A Wardrobe, and a Great War // Someone recommended this to me (if it was you, please comment below!). It sounds fascinating and a great companion read for some books below.
5 Rereads // This was a fun goal last year. I think rereading books is a great practice. Different things stick out to me depending on what’s going on in my life. I am excited about rereading some favorites this year!
The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit // I’ve been wanting to reread both of these for a while. The last time I read them was for my senior course for my English BA. Really excited to experience them again!
50 Total Books // I’m keeping my total book goal the same as last year. It stretched me just enough but was also attainable. And I have finished one already!
What are you reading this year?

I too, love Little Dorrit. I saw a 6 hour (or so) film a while ago, that showed the story first from LD’s point of view and then from Arthur Clennam’s, I haven’t heard of it since. I didn’t know there was a BBC series, I must have a look. I hope you enjoy it.

Thank you! I am really enjoying it thus far. The BBC version is really beautiful. I love Claire Foy as LD. Hope you check it out soon! 🙂

I really need to re-read The Hobbit… I read it back when I was a freshman in high school, but its been MANY years since lol I loved it then, would I love it as much now as an adult?

That’s how I feel about rereading these books! It’s been years. I am excited to see what I think this time–hoping I love them still 🙂

Invincible Louisa is fantastic! I’ve never heard of A Hobbit, a Wardrobe, and a Great War but now I’m curious…The stories of groups of writers are often fascinating 🙂

I thought the same thing about Invincible Louisa! Made me want to read all her books (starting with Little Men and Jo’s Boys this year!) And yes, I agree!

I liked Jo’s Boys and Little Men a lot more than I thought I would (after Good Wives I wasn’t sure I wanted to read on, but I loved so many of the characters in the sequels :))

I’m glad to hear that! Sometimes it’s hard to live up to the goodness of the original 🙂

Thanks so much, Laila! I like to map out some of my books, but keep enough flexibility to read what I want too 🙂

Some great goals! I too seem to read one super long classic book each year. Last year was Roots, and this year I have been working through War and Peace.

That’s awesome! Great minds think alike, right? 🙂 How are you enjoying War and Peace so far?

Little Dorritt is fantastic! And the BBC miniseries pretty much follows it exactly, so if you like one I imagine you’d like the other.
I’m more ambivalent about A Hobbit, A Wardrobe, and a Great War. I felt like it was a historian trying to do literary criticism–poorly. Because he’s writing outside his field. He also relied heavily on John Garth’s Tolkien and the Great War, to the point that I felt I would have been better off reading Garth’s book in the first place, rather than an extended summarization of it.

Ohh yay! Super excited for Little Dorrit now–loved that miniseries!
And thanks for your thoughts on the Tolkien/Lewis/WWI book. I will have to do a bit of research about that Garth book as well.

Good luck! I’m trying to read more Newbery winners this year, too. Eventually I want to read all the winners.

I am not reading a book for fun until summer due to school. The first book I am reading this summer is Nicholas Nickleby

I did the same thing when I was in school! Otherwise, I wouldn’t do my homework 😉 I want to read more Dickens this year as well!

That is why I attempt to read classics in a limited amount of time: because of school. After I graduate in school, will still do the classic challenge but will expand the deadline
