Top 10 Tuesday: 10 Literary Halloween Costumes

Hi all! Tonight I’m here with an installment of Top 10 Tuesday hosted by The Broke and The Bookish!

This week’s theme is Halloween–very timely for this fun holiday week. I love Halloween for the chocolate and darling kids costumes. I’m not a big fan of scary though–I usually avoid scary movies and books and stories. But I loved the idea of literary Halloween costumes that they suggest on the prompt page. I made a list of some favorites that I have actually dressed up as and some that I would love to try in the future. So here we go, some of my favorite literary Halloween costumes! Enjoy 🙂

Harry Potter // I was Harry Potter myself for Halloween when I was in elementary school. I wore my dad’s bath robe, had my mom draw a lightning shaped scar on my forehead and confused all the parents as we trick or treated while the kids were impressed.

Harry Potter inspired items // Some favorites include the Firebolt or Nimbus 2000, Horcruxes, or the golden snitch.

Edgar Allen Poe with a Raven // Bonus points if you can recite all or a portion of the classic poem.

Madeline // One of my favorite children’s books. Such a cute costume idea!

Mary Poppins // We read this book together earlier this year and were surprised by some new twists to the story from the movie. A classic character!

Anne of Green Gables // Just finished this classic again this week. What would Anne think of us dying our hair red like hers for a costume? 🙂

Alice, the White Rabbit, or the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland // Classic characters. Classic costumes.

Oliver Twist, Little Dorrit, Pip, or any Charles Dickens protagonist // Grab some old, ratty clothes and rub some dirt on your face. Extra points if you can do an authentic Cockney accent.

Frankenstein // I’m thinking original Mary Shelley here. Definitely worthwhile.

Winnie the Pooh characters // Love these stories and love these characters. So cute!

Bonus: A Bookmark // Inspired by one of our favorite TV shows. Have you seen The Middle? If not, please check it out! It’s a hilarious (and clean) comedy about a quirky family living in the middle of nowhere in the US Midwest. Their youngest son, Brick, is obsessed with books and dresses up as a bookmark to inspire his classmates to support the library. Classic!
